Birth / Labour Pools
Research shows that use of a birth pool is one of the most effective forms of pain relief during labour, second only to epidural anesthesia. Use of a pool does not mean you have to have a water birth - you can be immersed during labour and then get out of the pool when it is time to push. Research shows birth pools as distinct (and superior!) to a bath tub - birth pools offer greater pain relief as they are less cramped and allow more movement for the birthing person.
Our pools can be rented by anyone in Nova Scotia, Canada. The IWK Hospital in Halifax, NS, supports water birth. Not all medical professionals have training in it, so if it your desire to give birth in the water, it is important to discuss with your care provider ahead of time. Other hospitals in NS do not yet support water birth (but we are advocating for change!) If you are under the care of midwives, they can support home water births.
